Fabrication

Onemost Studio, Atlanta GA

Between 2021 and 2023 I worked for a custom furniture builder where I applied my decades of experience in theatrical set construction and shop knowledge to high end custom furniture fabrication both residential and commercial.

On this steel pedestal base I wanted to hide the welds wherever I could to give the final product a clean look and minimize grinding. The finished base was blackened and assembled with a hardwood top and integrated lighting.

While working at the furniture studio it was very interesting to develop my skills in fine woodworking, working with species like walnut, oak, and ash among others. Coming from the theatre where a furniture piece may be plywood or pine and painted to look like oak, and often must be built or painted with embellishment to be seen from a distance.

Temple University, Philadelphia, PA

In the 2019-2020 school year, in addition to my role as an adjunct assistant professor, I provided technical support services to Temple University and served as Technical Director on three of their main stage theatre productions.

One housekeeping project I was able to work on while managing the scene shop was creating a storage system for our box of rigging hardware.  I used 3D modeling software to design cubbies around these plastic bins and used the crawlbot cnc router to cut out the plywood pieces.  As a grad student in 2018 I consulted on the decision for the theatre department to buy this particular machine as an affordable and space saving entry into CNC in Temple's tiny shop.

The Country Wife

One of the student designed productions I tech directed at Temple was a production of The Country Wife. The design had curved walls on both sides of the stage.  We used the crawlbot CNC again to help in cutting the curved toggles for building the flats. Unofrtunately this production was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Graduate Teaching Assistant

As a graduate student at Temple from 2015-2018 I served as a teaching assistant, teaching undergraduate course in stage design and production and working to lead student crews in the shop each afternoon.  For my deisign of Romeo and Juliet we needed some styrofoam balusters. We built some foam blanks around pieces of emt conduit and I was able to turn them on the lathe with a custom jig.

Lookingglass Theatre, Chicago IL

From 2013-2015 I was one of the regular hired carpenters at Lookingglass Theatre.  On the productin In the Garden I was trusted with the build of this oversized bookcase which required a higher level of finish than is typical in theatrical construction.
